Dues in Context

A kindly contributor who prefers to remain anonymous has sent The Disgruntled Sociologist the following informative graphic:
Even without the proposed dues increase, that looks like a bad deal. Perhaps sociologists should join the AEA and see about creating a “Sociology” section.

Sure, we could adopt the lower fee structure of AEA, but to do so we’d have to cut back on all the ASA’s efforts to create public awareness of the discipline. Isn’t an extra few hundred dollars a year worth it to avoid sociology being as obscure and powerless as economics?
Yes, like that awesome public awareness of the discipline generated by the NYT piece on the Wal-Mart suit. What could be better than an awareness that sociologists make stuff up (sorry, apply theory), fully endorsed by the ASA.
